Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin on sanctions against Iran
Russia does not intend to continue the discussion of sanctions against Iran in the UN Security Council, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin declared in the course of a Moscow-New York TV link-up on 1 February 2012.
He said that the sanctions against Tehran have exhausted themselves and now it is time to seriously settle down to talks between Iran and the six intermediaries and contacts between Iran and the IAEA.
The diplomat pointed out that there was no acute tension around the Iranian issue in the UN Security Council.
At the same time, Churkin admitted that the growing confrontation between Iran and the international community continues to raise grave concern. “This is one of the worst problems in 2012,” the diplomat said and expressed hope for a favourable solution to this problem.
